This upper elementary math course emphasizes abstract thinking and mental math strategies within the problem solving model. This class is an interactive hands-on approach to thinking about mathematics and will use manipulatives to introduce new concepts and reinforce previous ones. Students will work in groups and complete individual tests and quizzes to show mastery of the curriculum.
Mathematics 5 Curriculum Description:
Place value through the billions place
Comparing and ordering whole numbers, fractions and decimals
Estimation/Rounding whole numbers and decimals
Addition/Subtraction (up to 5 digit numbers, with/without regrouping)
Decimal place value (to the thousandths place, equivalent decimals, multiplication/division)
Multiplication (3 digit multipliers, factor trees)
Prime/Composite Numbers
Division (3 digit quotient/4 digit dividend)
Fractions (equivalent, improper/mixed numbers,common factors, lowest terms, multiply/divide)
Geometry (angle measures, perimeter /surface area)
Measurement (customary and metric, capacity, weight)
Ratios/Percents
Introduction to integers
This class will meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
